Coffee Table with a good pallet.
Everything has a beginning, and some things start out really bad. I have always loved the look of aged wood, perhaps because I knew that something beautiful lay beneath the surface. Outside of mold and oil, wood never really loses its appeal. If you are willing to put a little elbow grease into a project, wood even badly weathered has a lot to offer. Aged wood has something new wood can't offer. Not to sound poetic, but aged wood is honest. It can't lie about where it has been. Every ding, chip and crack has something to share about its life. When you give new life to antique, aged, or repurposed wood, I would hope that you choose to leave most of the story still intact.
My first project. How did it all begin... I was lying in bed and was again struggling to fall asleep. My wife had been pushing me to be more motivated with things I like to do for me. I had been spending a lot of time at the shop and I suppose it was beginning to show its affects at home. In other words, home was becoming work. If it wasn't work I was I was bringing home, then it was how tired I was (a.k.a. falling asleep on the couch). Then it hit me, I should finally do what I had always wanted to do as a kid, Carpentry, or at least some form of it. I turned over to her and rambled a bit to her about my childhood dream urging to unleashed. I told her about what I thought I could do using old shipping pallets. She was barely awake enough to give me a nod, but I took that affirmation and ran with it. The next day I talked to a few of my store's venders and asked if I could take a few of their delivery pallet. They graciously unloaded and the rest is history... or a work in progress. Together we learn.
